Bio
Ms. Purcell lives in New York City and currently has a studio in Union City, New
Jersey. She came to stone carving by chance at an Art Festival workshop in upstate
New York in 1992 and has not stopped carving since that time. Her past 22 summers
have been spent in the historic town of Pietrasanta, Italy, where she lives and carves
stone in the atmosphere of the great Italian tradition of stone carving.
Artist Statement
Ms. Purcell believes that stone carving, because of the demand of time and physical
effort, creates a sense of intimacy with the stone itself. This aspect of involvement and
intimacy with each piece of stone and the creative process of stone carving keeps her
totally captured for each and every moment.
